Northern Jordan road trip

Jerash, Ajloun & Umm Qais by Car

Roman streets, a hilltop castle, pine-covered highlands and wide northern views make this one of Jordan’s most rewarding routes beyond Petra.

A day trip to Jerash and Ajloun is manageable from Amman, while adding Umm Qais creates a longer day or a relaxed overnight route. A private driver is useful for guests who want to focus on the scenery; a rental car offers flexibility for travellers comfortable with local roads.

Walk the Roman city of Jerash

Jerash is known for Hadrian’s Arch, the Oval Plaza, theatres and long colonnaded streets. It deserves time on foot, so arrive early, wear suitable shoes and check current entrance information on the official Jordan Tourism Board portal.

Climb into the green hills of Ajloun

Ajloun contrasts with Jordan’s desert image. Pine-covered landscapes surround the Ayyubid castle, giving the route a different character in every season. Hill roads reward a comfortable vehicle and unhurried driving.

Extend north to Umm Qais

Umm Qais combines black basalt ruins, an Ottoman-era village and broad views across the northern landscape. Because it is farther from Amman, plan daylight and return time carefully or stay overnight in the region.

Vehicle and timing advice

Economy cars and sedans suit the paved route, while a crossover can add comfort on hill roads and extra room for a family. Avoid overloading the day with too many stops; Jerash plus Ajloun makes a balanced trip, while Umm Qais is best added when the group can start early.
