Petra is approximately 235 kilometres south of Amman. The direct drive normally takes around three hours on the Desert Highway, while the scenic King’s Highway is slower and better treated as part of the experience rather than simply a transfer. Whichever route you choose, leaving early gives you more daylight and a less rushed arrival in Wadi Musa.

The Desert Highway: the practical route
The Desert Highway is the faster choice for travellers who want to reach Petra efficiently. It is the better option when your hotel check-in, Petra entry time or onward plans matter more than sightseeing on the drive. Service stations are available along the route, but it is still sensible to start with enough fuel, water and a charged phone.
The King’s Highway: the scenic route
The King’s Highway passes through landscapes and historic areas that can turn the transfer into a full travel day. Madaba, viewpoints near Wadi Mujib, Karak and Dana can all influence the route you plan. Allow extra time and avoid building an overly ambitious schedule around your first day in Petra.
What type of rental car do you need?
A reliable economy car or sedan is suitable for the main paved routes between Amman and Petra. A crossover or SUV can provide extra luggage space and comfort for a family or a longer itinerary. A 4WD is not required for Petra itself. Rental insurance does not cover off-road or desert driving, including unapproved driving in Wadi Rum, so remain on paved roads and use authorised local transport inside protected desert areas.
Plan the Petra visit, not only the drive
Petra is a large archaeological site and involves substantial walking. Arriving late after a long scenic drive can leave too little time for the main trail. Many visitors prefer to sleep in Wadi Musa, begin early the following morning and keep the vehicle parked while exploring on foot.
Comfortable shoes, sun protection and water matter throughout the year. In winter, check local weather because heavy rain may affect routes and access. Review current visitor information on the official Visit Petra portal and consider the official Jordan Pass before travel.
Useful stops and extensions
If your itinerary continues south, Wadi Rum is roughly another ninety minutes from Petra. Aqaba is also a natural continuation for travellers planning time on the Red Sea. For a northern return, you can choose a different road to avoid repeating the same scenery.
